  • Advocacy to save women from unnecessary hysterectomies: Abuse of community health insurance and serious threat of forced surgeries of varying incidence levels has become rampant in several states. CARPED has been instrumental in national debate on the need for medical ethics and transparency and strengthening government responsibility in ensuring the health rights and medicare are not threatened by malpractices in private healthcare. Evidence based advocacy by CARPED and like-minded groups as well as media supporting the fight against medical malpractices has been effective in convincing state government to delete hysterectomies from Arogyasri community health insurance scheme in 2011 which earlier used to pay handsome money to private hospitals for removal of uterus. A few other state governments have also deleted or introduced checks on hysterectomies in community health insurance schemes. Studies, campaigns and community mobilization efforts in this regard since 2005 have been pioneering and assisting other agencies in arresting violations of human rights in community health 9 insurance schemes by sharing empirical data and field studies, and providing material for media advocacy and research in public health as well.
  • CARPED evidence based advocacy through field study in Kowdipally mandal of Medak district and media campaign has been effective in drawing attention of leading media in the state (Eenadu Telugu daily, TV9 local TV channel, Amir Khan's Satyamev Jayate series on 'Does Healthcare Need Healing' covered Coerced Into Hysterectomies, Down to Earth, The Hindu, and international media like BBC, Reuters etc have highlighted the issue of unnecessary hysterectomies based on the applicant NGO's concerted efforts. Concerted efforts were fruitful in voicing the collective voice of the civil society against unnecessary hysterectomies and violation of women's health rights in the state and were successful in getting the state government support to delist hysterectomy from the list of procedures for private empanelled hospitals under Arogyasri health insurance scheme that saved thousands of women from getting conned into unnecessary surgeries by the greedy doctors (instructions were issued on January 18, 2011 and July 17, 2012 to ensure that only genuine cases undergo the procedure in government hospitals). That resulted in arresting the surgeries from a peak of 12,212 hysterectomy cases in 2009-10 to 4,943 in 2011-12. Several thousand women are saved from becoming victims of unnecessary hysterectomies.
  • Action research and advocacy resulted in delisting hysterectomies under community health insurance programme in Andhra Pradesh called Rajiv Arogyasree that arrested thousands of rural women being coerced into hysterectomy ever year by the greedy medical practitioners. These advocacy experiences have been a pioneer in India in building public opinion for government regulation to arrest unnecessary hysterectomies in private hospitals.
